This is the view from the citadel of Dinant on the river Maas, La Meuse as the French speaking population of that part of Belgium would call it.
We took a guided tour of the citadel and I was horrified by the stories of blood spilling and cruelty that happened here. This part of the river has seen many a battle to defend the city against foreign intruders. What is a peaceful city now has been a place where thousands of people lost their lives throughout history.

Can anything be stupider
than that a man has the right to kill me because he lives on the other side of a river
and his ruler has a quarrel with mine,
though
I have not quarreled with him?

~ Blaise Pascal ~

  1. It is good to be reminded of our history so we - hopefully - will improve our future!
